The Dawn of a New Era
On June 12-13, 2021 a cohort of 6 aspirant Sea Kayak Leader Providers gathered on Maine’s middle coast to attend their required “Community Event,” a final benchmark on their way to becoming full award providers. This event marked a huge step forward for providing Sea Kayak Leader Awards in North America. Between the 6 of us, we covered the Pacific North West Coast, the Mid-West & Great Lakes, and the Northeast Coast.
We spent the two days discussing the currents standards of the awards and how to assess leadership. We talked about how to support the learning of aspirant leaders, and having a learner-led approach to training and assessing. Most of the discussions were led by us. All of us came with different experience, knowledge and skills, and we all came with questions about the standard we are expected to uphold. We delivered some practice “training sessions” and had a chance to discuss different methods. We also got to paddle (shocker, I know), which served to verify our skills in the Moderate Water Environment.
More Opportunities On The Way
Historically British Canoeing Leadership Awards have been hard to achieve because of the lack of providers. I’ve had to travel abroad to receive every certification I’ve gotten because it was my only option. With these new changes, these awards will be more available to leaders of sea kayak adventures across the country. There will be more opportunities to provide awards and more opportunities for us as a paddling community to learn from each other.
