Prerequisites: You are comfortable with water, in good physical condition, and have been in a single kayak before.

This is the starting place for new paddlers or for people who have some experience but need more foundation to their existing skills. You will learn current kayaking techniques in capsize recoveries, body-boat-blade awareness, strokes for steering, going straight, sideways, staying upright, and bracing. This course will give you a solid foundation to get you started and that will carry over as you advance as a kayaker.

For paddlers at any level capsize recoveries such as rolling, and solid effective bracing are among the most sought after skills in paddle sports. Many of the mechanics of rolling and bracing are the same. At Body Boat Blade we've developed an effective progression to get students to learn and be successful at these highly desired skills. In this class we will spend time developing a solid understanding of what your body needs to do in order to recover from an off-balanced position whether it is slight or a complete capsize. We will help you develop solid foundations for successful practice.

For coaches who teach these skills this is a great class to expand your "toolbox" in helping individuals work through problems learning these skills.

STAND UP PADDLE (SUP) BOARD FOUNDATIONS — 1 Day

Stand Up Paddle-boarding is one of the most popular and fastest growing water sports in North America. This 1-day intro class will cover board design, balance, posture, and stance, forward movement, directional control, and some techniques for turning and dealing with wind. We'll also cover the safety and risk assessment - choosing the best place to practice and play for your skill, experience and equipment.

JOURNEY ON THE SEA 3-DAY SKILLS CAMP — 3 Days

Designed for students who have taken classes from us in the past and have a strong foundation of paddling skills who want to continue developing but may not feel ready to paddle the Islands on their own, or for students who want to get more coaching while on a trip. This class can help you further develop your tidal planning, navigation and other personal skills.

Designed for students who have taken classes from us in the past and have fundamental paddling skills who want to continue developing but may not feel ready to paddle the Islands on their own, or for students who want to get more coaching while on a trip. This class can help you further develop your tidal planning, navigation and other personal skills.

TIDE AND CURRENT PLANNING WORKSHOP — 4 Hours

Having the ability to predict how the sea moves through the islands is a critical component to having a safe and enjoyable time on the water. In this workshop you will learn how to predict the time, speed and direction of the currents flow, the features they create, and how to plan a safe trip. This is a dry classroom workshop, no boat is required.

Body Boat Blade coaches are certified Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning Providers for the British Canoe Union.

ADVANCED SEA KAYAK SAFETY & RESCUE — 2 Days

Prerequisites: Solid roll, solid tidal current paddling skills, familiarity with towing. Boats must have proper sea kayak safety features such as deck lines, end toggles, bulkheads, and no rudder.

This is a class for paddlers who seek out more dynamic environments and therefore need a more comprehensive tool kit for risk assessment, incident management and rescues. Paddling in fast moving, rough water requires everything you do to be well thought out from your skills to your equipment. This class gives you solid experience to base your future risk assessments on and helps you to develop your equipment to be ready when you need it.

SEA KAYAK SAFETY & RESCUE — 2 Days

Prerequisites: Comfortable with wet exits, basic boat handling skills.

In this two day class you will learn how to be prepared for a safe journey on the sea. We will cover solid practical rescues for yourself and others, what equipment is useful and necessary and how to deal with incidents. We will also cover useful strokes to make rescues faster and and more effective, and how to develop a good risk assessment for yourself and your group. Body Boat Blade coaches are certified BCU Foundation Safety and Rescue trainers, and BCU 4 Star Coastal Leadership providers for the British Canoe Union, you can count on us to deliver the most current rescue practices making this is a great introductory or refresher course for every paddler.

This comprehensive class will give you a large "tool box" of practical rescue skills that can be used on flat water or in advanced conditions. With cutting edge knowledge from coaches with the experience to know what does and does not work on the water, you will learn to solve problems that arise during rescues, and which safety products are effective. Risk assessment as a method to avoid needing to do rescues will also be emphasized throughout the course. This class is highly recommended for anyone leading groups or teaching in clubs.

The FSRT is a prerequisite for the BCU coaching curriculum.

HOW TO TEACH ROLLING — 2 days

Prerequisites: At least one working roll 80% of the time

Rolling is one of the most sought after skills in paddle sport. If we want to help someone to learn to roll there are some basic concepts of biomechanics and coaching methods that if understood, greatly increases the success of teaching this skill while also decreasing the time it takes students to learn it. Over the last two decades Body Boat Blade has taught hundreds of paddlers a solid efficient roll, most recently we have worked for over 4 years on a research project with biomechanics experts to understand this skill in depth. We want to share this knowledge with people who want to teach this important and fun skill.

INCIDENT MANAGEMENT — Two Day

Prerequisites: BCU 3 Star skills, a tidal currents course, and a solid roll.

Regardless of the quality of your equipment or how well you prepare for a trip, there is always the unpredictability of the sea and the "human factor". Things can go wrong when you journey on the sea. This one day class is designed to put you in situations you least expected or hoped would never happen. We will be forced to deal with scenarios such as: sea sickness, dislocated shoulders, a heart attack, holes in boats, broken paddles, lost equipment, hypothermia, capsizing while towing, VHF radios with dead batteries, and flares that fizzle. After each incident we evaluate what went right and wrong. We will dissect failed equipment and look at ways to improve its performance in the future. Through two full days of training, we can decrease the chance of these incidences from occurring and increase your ability to deal with them if they should.

This class is a about developing a deep understanding and mastery of the technical skills used to move your boat where you want it to go with maximum efficiency. From edging to bow rudders, hanging draws to backwards paddling, forward paddling to bracing we will use the body-boat-blade method to analyze and improve your performance.

For students with good basic skills wanting to maximize efficiency. This is a class students can take again and again until that day when your paddling becomes effortless perfection!

Prerequisites: BCU 2 Star Award or experienced paddler with strong skills but no BCU training, be comfortable with a wet exit and rescues.

This class is intended for experienced kayakers looking to hone their skills to a high level of performance in dynamic environments. We develop an understanding of how wind, waves and currents affects our kayaks and how we can use these affects to control our boats with certainty and ease. With the techniques of solid edge control, subtle and dynamic blade awareness, an active posture and the forces of the environment we develop skillful performance allowing you to take your paddling to new level of performance. INTRO TO KAYAK NAVIGATION — 2 Days

With some time at the chart table and and some time on the water weaving our way through a beautiful archipelago you will learn the foundations of sea kayak navigation. Using compass, chart, and watch, you will be introduced you to concepts such as fixing your position, planning for currents and wind, reading a chart, and staying on course in areas of moderate tidal movement. You will be well on your way to becoming the captain of your craft!

FIVE DAY SKILLS KAYAK CAMP — 5 Days

Prerequisites: Paddler with experience on the water, looking for in-depth knowledge, or 2 Star skills or above. Must be comfortable with a wet exit.

This is our most comprehensive class. For 5 days, you will be immersed in sea kayaking. We will use the pull of the moon to go from one island to another, faster and with less effort. We will learn how to go from a "low oxygen environment" to a "high oxygen environment" with the drop of a leg and a sweep of the paddle. We will eat seaweed, see awesome wildlife, and roast marshmallows by the campfire. This is a learning vacation! With other paddlers and great coaches, you will learn about: kayak technique, kayak rescues, rolling, towing, reading and predicting currents, and navigation.If you are passionate about kayaking, have the stamina to play hard for five days in a row, and love to learn, this is a great class for you!

OCEAN CURRENTS I : One Day at Deception PassOne Day

Prerequisites: BCU 2 Star skills or above, safety and rescue class, must be very comfortable with wet exits.

This one-day class focuses on building the skills necessary to paddle in areas with strong currents.  Utilizing beautiful Deception Pass (at slightly lesser current speeds than the two-day Ocean Currents class), we'll focus on the foundational skills necessary for paddling in moving water. This class will take place on the ebb, offering lots of practice crossing eddy lines, recognizing and using eddies, staying upright in upwellings and small whirlpools,  and using the current as a tool for graceful maneuvering.  This fun-focused class is also a great transition between Body Boat Blade or Performance Paddling and our Ocean Currents class.  This is a confidence building one-day sea kayak class for paddlers who want to try out their skills in moving water. 

OCEAN CURRENTS : Two Days at Deception Pass2 Days

Prerequisites: BCU 2 Star skills or above, safety and rescue class, must be very comfortable with wet exits.

Deception Pass is famous throughout the Northwest for its 8-knot currents, drastic eddy lines, incredible whirlpools, and large upwellings. Many kayakers look at this pass with fear, but with the right coaching and leadership it becomes a playground and an incredible learning environment. We will spend two days using both the ebb and flood to work on applying a full range of strokes efficiently to moving water, including: ferry gliding, sneaking up current lines, entering current backwards, rescues, rolling, and dealing with dynamic water. This class offers tremendous opportunities for the intermediate paddler and will take advantage of everything Deception Pass has to offer.

There is a joke in the paddling community: "Let's go learn the advanced kayak strokes also known as the basic canoe strokes." At Body Boat Blade, we have learned that good canoeist make great kayakers. The emphasis of this class is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating desired movement of the boat and developing an understanding of how the paddle, boat and water interact.

SAN JUAN CURRENTS — 2 Days

Prerequisites: BCU 3 Star Skills, Ocean Currents Class, confident rescue skills and a solid roll

Learn the skills and strategies for dealing with the powerful currents, tidal races, and over falls that run through the San Juan Islands. We will explore ferry gliding, how to read water, crossing strategies, and how to predict the time, speed, and direction of currents. These are the skills you need to plan an easy, fun, and safe trip. We start by refreshing your skills, and then we enter these races and build your confidence as the currents increase. This is a great class to start building your rough water skills and broaden your knowledge of the sea. Come to this class with play in mind!

"OFF SEASON" PADDLING AND EXPEDITION TRAINING — 4 Days

Before our circumnavigation of Iceland, a mentor of ours said "if you know you can get warm and dry at the end of the day you can survive almost anything". It was great advice that has paid off many times over. In this class we will share our many years of experience of staying warm and dry on expeditions and winter camping trips in the Pacific Northwest . We will spend one day in the classroom preparing our gear and planning the trip and three days paddling in the wet, windy and cold weather of what the locals call the "off Season". Sounds like a misery-fest but with the right gear and knowledge the "off season" becomes the "on season" and expeditions become vacations!

HARD CORE

This class is for the hard core paddler who just can't get enough of paddling and who never stops wanting to learn new things. This class is one day of mostly messing about in a small boat with some practical outcomes for the committed paddler. Speed Launching from docks, the Dump, the Haggigi, the "No Roll" roll and the Deep-Digitty-Dig will be but a few of the skills we will develop.

With a blend of classroom and on water sessions we will weave our way through a beautiful archipelago both in daylight and at night to build your confidence as navigators. Using the tools of kayak navigation: compass, chart, and watch, we will help you master this very important skill allowing you to keep track of where you are on the water and when you need to take your next turn. You will learn to adjust for currents and wind, safely cross shipping lanes, hit your destinations on open crossings and arrive when you planned to! With solid navigation skills you will become the captain of your craft!

COASTAL LEADERSHIP TRAINING : Includes BCU 4 Star Leader Training Curriculum : Option A3 Days

Emphasis will be on judging the conditions and the abilities of the group to make appropriate decisions about planned routes along with the need to modify plans as needed. Option A consists of 3 days on the outer coast of Washington with no overnight camping. Includes BCU 4 Star Leader Training Curriculum If you hold all the prerequisites for the New BCU 4 Star training ( www.paddlesportsnorthamerica.org ) This course will meet the required hours of formal training needed to attend an assessment.

COASTAL LEADERSHIP TRAINING : Includes BCU 4 Star Leader Training, Coastal Navigation & Tidal Planning Curriculum : Option B 6 Days

This six day version of our coastal leadership courses is focused on leading and navigating in a tidal environment while camping along the way. This coarse will meet the BCU Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning prerequisite as well as the required 18 hours of BCU 4 Star training. Each day we will generate a risk assessment and trip plan. Each student will have an opportunity to lead and navigate the group for a full day through the tidal waters of the San Juan Islands. When not leading you will stay involved in the planning navigating and shepherding of the group and will be asked to work as a the co-leader.Option B consists of one day of classroom and 5 days on the inner tidal waters with 4 nights camping. This course will meet the required hours of formal training needed to attend an assessment. Note: this training will likely not include surf landings.

BCU 2 STAR SKILLS TRAINING — 2 Days

The 2 Star Award is a requirement for all paddlers interested in becoming a BCU UKCC Coach for Paddlesports North America.

BCU 3 STAR SKILLS TRAINING — 2 Days

As a 3 Star paddler, you can skillfully control your kayak in a variety of conditions through a blending of body, boat, and blade positions. Your skills are efficient, with an awareness of the effect the environment has on your kayak. You operate as a competent member of a group, with a good awareness of yourself and others. You participate in the planning of trips, and if called on you have solid rescue skills and the ability to tow. This two day course starts you on the pat to becoming a 3 Star paddler.

Note: This training will not include surf landings.

Prerequisites: New BCU 2 Star Award, BCU Foundation Safety and Rescue Test, Registered with BCUNA.

This is an introductory coaching award with an overriding priority for safety and fun. This course is intended for those who wish to introduce kayakers at a "taster level", in sheltered waters, as directed by a higher level coach.

HOW TO TEACH ROLLING — 2 days

Prerequisites: At least one working roll 80% of the time

Rolling is one of the most sought after skills in paddle sport. If we want to help someone to learn to roll there are some basic concepts of biomechanics and coaching methods that if understood, greatly increases the success of teaching this skill while also decreasing the time it takes students to learn it. Over the last two decades Body Boat Blade has taught hundreds of paddlers a solid efficient roll, most recently we have worked for over 4 years on a research project with biomechanics experts to understand this skill in depth. We want to share this knowledge with people who want to teach this important and fun skill.

PRIVATE ROLLING — 90 Minutes

FEE: US $120.00

Prerequisites: Comfortable with water, some very basic kayak skills.

Rolling a kayak is a foundation skill. Once you have your roll, your other kayak skills tend to increase exponentially, as does your confidence! The skilled coaches at Body Boat Blade will help you attain a solid, effective roll quickly. We work one-on-one with you to develop your roll from a body-centered perspective. Avoid learning "bad habits" from self teaching or working with untrained peers. We have been teaching successful rolling skills for nearly 20 years!

 

How To Register

Contact Body Boat Blade with the names and dates of the classes/trips you would like to register for. We can answer all of your questions, talk about class/trip prerequisites and requirements, and get you signed up!

Payment

Body Boat Blade accepts payment with most major credit cards, PayPal, cash (US only), and checks.

A deposit of 1/2 the class fee is due at the time of registration with the balance due at the time of the class.

Cancelation Policy

You can cancel and receive a full refund, minus a $25.00 office fee, if you cancel 30 days prior to the class date. You will not receive a refund if you cancel less than 30 days prior of the class date, unless we can fill your spot, in which case you get a full refund minus the $25.00 office fee.
